Vault's Self-Custody Immersion: how it works
Vault's Self-Custody Immersion is an in-person weekend course where each participant sets up their own hardware wallet from scratch, practices sending and receiving bitcoin, and only finishes when the setup is validated by a specialist. Groups are capped at 15 people and take place at Vault's office in Vila Olímpia, São Paulo. This post explains what happens over the two days, what you take home, who the format is for and who it is not for. The course is taught in Portuguese.
Why in person, and why a small group
Self-custody is a manual skill with silent mistakes. A word written down wrong, a backup never restored or an address never verified on the device give no sign on the day; they show up years later, when nothing can be done. In a video, nobody sees your sheet. In a group of 15, someone does.
Hence the format: each person with their own device, their own recovery sheet and their own mistake corrected on the spot. The pace is the group's, not a recorded script's, and the final validation is individual: the specialist confirms that the wallet restores from the backup and that sending and receiving work before signing off on the setup.
What happens over the two days
The program covers the full cycle, in the order it happens in real life.
Cold wallet setup from scratch. Seal, firmware, PIN, generating and writing down the recovery words, confirming them on the device. The script described in how to set up a Ledger for the first time, done with someone watching.
Restore test. The device is wiped and restored from the backup, and the address is checked. It is the step most people never do alone, and the one that separates having a backup from thinking you have one.
Sending and receiving practice. Receiving from an exchange, verifying the address on the device screen, sending a test amount, understanding network fees.
Ways to buy bitcoin. The routes to buy and bring coins into your own wallet, with the costs of each.
Day-to-day use. Spending with privacy, crypto cards with cashback and access to dollars without Brazil's IOF tax, for the part of the portfolio that circulates.
Setup validation. Nobody leaves unsure whether the wallet works. The specialist checks every setup before the end.
Next dates, detailed agenda and pricing are on the Immersion page (in Portuguese).
What you take home
A hardware wallet set up, restored and tested, with a backup done properly. The practice of sending and receiving without depending on anyone. And the ability to repeat the process alone for the second wallet, which is when the skill sets in.
You also leave knowing what not to do: a photo of the seed, a passphrase with no backup, an unverified address, a first transfer with the full amount. The mistakes that reach a recovery service are almost always these, and the Immersion exists so you never need one.
Who it is for
The Immersion was designed for investors with more than R$ 100,000 in crypto assets who want to protect that wealth, and who still hold on an exchange or in a wallet they never tested. That is the range where an irreversible loss costs more than the weekend and the device. The post self-custody vs exchange helps decide how much should leave the exchange.
It also makes sense for people who have used a hardware wallet for years and never ran a restore test, never set up a passphrase with its own backup or have no succession plan. That profile is usually the most surprised on day one.
Selection happens after signing up on the Immersion page: the team gets in touch within 24 hours for a short conversation about your profile, to confirm the format will serve you.
Who it is not for
Someone with a small crypto balance, for whom free content and a calm restore test do the job. Someone who wants another person to set up the wallet for them: the Immersion teaches you to do it, it does not do it for you, because whoever sets it up knows your backup. And someone looking for guidance on what to buy: that is the work of crypto advisory, a different Vault service with a different format.
How the Immersion relates to advisory
Vault Capital is a securities advisory firm authorized by Brazil's CVM under CVM Resolution 19/2021 and never holds custody of client assets. Advisory recommends an allocation across crypto and fixed income and follows the portfolio; the Immersion teaches clients to hold their own assets. Many advisory clients take the Immersion so that their custody matches their strategy, and many Immersion participants meet the advisory there. Both roads lead to the same principle: your wealth stays in your name, with the keys in your hands.
Crypto assets carry high risk, including significant volatility and the possibility of losing the invested capital. Self-custody reduces counterparty risk, not asset risk.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Immersion in person or online?
In person, over a weekend, at Vault's office in Vila Olímpia, São Paulo. The format exists so the specialist can see your device and your backup, which does not happen online.
Do I need to bring my own hardware wallet?
Instructions about the device are sent once your seat is confirmed. What matters is that the wallet set up at the Immersion is yours, with the seed generated by you, in front of you.
Is it worth it if I already own a Ledger or Trezor?
Yes, if you have never restored the wallet from its backup, never set up a passphrase with its own backup or have no succession plan. Those three points are what long-time hardware wallet users most often lack.
How much does it cost and when is the next group?
Pricing and dates are on the Immersion page, updated for each edition. There are 15 seats per group, and selection starts with a sign-up and a short conversation about your profile.
