Self-custody vs exchange: where to keep crypto in 2026
Self-custody vs exchange is a decision about who carries the risk of holding the asset. On an exchange, the coins sit in the company's name: FTX customers learned this on November 11, 2022, when the exchange filed for bankruptcy in the United States owing customers as much as US$ 8 billion. In self-custody, counterparty risk disappears and operating risk becomes yours. For anyone in Brazil holding more than a few thousand reais in crypto, the practical answer is to split: exchange for trading, your own wallet for what you plan to keep.
In short
- Exchange: convenience and automatic tax reporting to the Receita Federal, but your balance is a claim against a company.
- Self-custody: you hold the keys, no platform can fail on you, and you alone answer for backups, inheritance and the monthly DeCripto report.
- Above an amount you could not afford to lose, the common practice is to trade on the exchange and store the rest offline.
| Criterion | Self-custody | Brazilian exchange | International exchange |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counterparty risk | None: the asset is in your wallet | Yes: an unsecured claim, not covered by the FGC deposit fund | Yes, and any claim is litigated abroad |
| Operating risk | Yours: seed phrase, backups, scams | The company's, with password recovery and support | The company's; support and freezes in another jurisdiction |
| Fees | One hardware wallet plus network fees | Trading fee (Foxbit: 0.25% maker, 0.50% taker at entry level) and withdrawals | Trading fee (Binance: 0.10%) and crypto withdrawal fees |
| Tax reporting | You file DeCripto when monthly operations exceed R$ 35,000 | The exchange reports to the Receita for you | You file DeCripto and pay under Law 14,754/2023 |
| Inheritance | Needs your own plan; no key, no estate | Probate with an exchange statement | Probate is harder, company outside Brazil |
| Ease | Learning curve at the start | High: Pix, app, support in Portuguese | High for trading, medium for cashing out in reais |
Who holds the keys
On an exchange you have an account and a balance; the company has the keys. What you see on screen is an internal ledger entry, not a position on the blockchain in your name.
In self-custody, the private key comes from a 12 or 24 word seed phrase only you know. No one can freeze, block or lose the asset on your behalf. No one can recover the key for you either. The post what is a seed phrase explains how it is generated and stored, and the guide to crypto custody compares hot wallets, cold wallets and institutional custody.
What happens when the platform fails
Two cases with dates and amounts put the risk in scale.
Mt. Gox, then the largest bitcoin exchange in the world, halted withdrawals on February 7, 2014 and filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo on February 28, with about 850,000 bitcoins missing.
FTX filed on November 11, 2022. The plan approved by the Delaware bankruptcy court on October 7, 2024 repays claims with interest, but in dollars and at asset prices on the petition date, when bitcoin traded below US$ 20,000. The first payments, for claims under US$ 50,000, started on February 18, 2025.
What each option costs
On an exchange the cost is recurring and proportional to how much you trade. On Foxbit's fee page, checked on September 30, 2026, the entry tier pays 0.25% as maker and 0.50% as taker, with Pix deposits and withdrawals in reais free of charge. On Binance's fee schedule, on the same date, a regular user pays 0.10% per trade, and the bitcoin withdrawal fee on the Bitcoin network was 0.00002 BTC.
In self-custody there is one cost: a hardware wallet, bought once, plus the network fee on each transfer.
Tax and reporting in Brazil
Capital gains tax is the same across the three options for a Brazilian tax resident: monthly assessment, an exemption when sales on Brazilian exchanges and in your own wallet total up to R$ 35,000 in the month, and 15% to 22.5% above that, paid by DARF under code 4600. What changes is who reports.
Normative Instruction RFB 2,291/2025, published on November 17, 2025, created the DeCripto report and revoked IN 1,888/2019 from July 1, 2026. If you only use a Brazilian exchange, you file nothing: the exchange reports. If you use a foreign exchange, a decentralized platform or wallet-to-wallet transfers, you file DeCripto whenever the month's operations exceed R$ 35,000, by the last business day of the following month. The late fee for individuals is R$ 100 per month, and an omission costs 1.5% of the transaction value.
Crypto on a foreign exchange also falls under Law 14,754/2023: 15% on the gain, assessed in the annual return, with no monthly exemption. Confirm your case with an accountant or run your history through Vault Tax.
Deciding by amount and profile
A working rule, with no claim to fit everyone:
- A few thousand reais and frequent trades: a Brazilian exchange.
- An amount that would hurt to lose: your own wallet for whatever will not be sold in the coming months, the exchange only for what is being traded.
- Significant wealth or dependents: self-custody with a written inheritance plan, a tested seed phrase recovery and, where it fits, multisig.
Crypto assets carry high risk, including significant volatility and the possibility of losing the capital invested, and no form of custody changes that. Vault Capital is a securities consultancy authorized by the CVM under CVM Resolution 19/2021 and works on the principle of advice, never custody: assets stay on the client's own exchanges and wallets. If you want to set up your own wallet with hands-on guidance, the Self-Custody Immersion is built for that, and the FAQ explains how Vault works without custody of client assets.
Frequently asked questions
Self-custody vs exchange: which is safer?
It depends on which risk you would rather carry. An exchange protects you from your own mistakes and exposes you to the company failing; self-custody protects you from the company and exposes you to backup errors. For meaningful amounts, most people combine both.
Are Brazilian exchange balances covered by the FGC?
No. The FGC covers bank deposits and some securities, not exchange balances. Central Bank licensing under Law 14,478/2022 imposes conduct rules but does not guarantee repayment if the exchange becomes insolvent.
Do I have to file DeCripto if I use my own wallet?
Only in months when your operations outside Brazilian exchanges exceed R$ 35,000, under IN RFB 2,291/2025. Moving coins from the exchange to your wallet is not a sale, but it counts as a reportable operation once you cross the threshold.
What happens to crypto on an exchange if I die?
It goes through probate like any other asset, and heirs request the balance with a court order. In self-custody, without the seed phrase or an inheritance plan, the asset is lost for good.
