How to calculate crypto tax in Brazil: tool, sheet or CPA
How to calculate crypto tax in Brazil comes down to volume and how scattered your history is. Someone with fewer than ten trades a year on a single Brazilian exchange can manage with a spreadsheet; anyone swapping crypto for crypto, using several platforms or trading abroad needs an accountant or a tool. The Receita Federal requires a monthly capital gains assessment, paid by DARF under code 4600 whenever sales in the month exceed R$ 35,000, and IN RFB 2,291/2025 added DeCripto, a monthly report for operations outside Brazilian exchanges, in force since July 1, 2026.
In short
- Spreadsheet: free, and it works until the first crypto-to-crypto swap or the second exchange.
- Accountant: takes on the technical responsibility, but depends on a history you have to deliver in order.
- Tool: consolidates accounts, computes cost basis and gets the DARF ready for you to issue; still needs review and does not replace judgment on edge cases.
| Criterion | Spreadsheet | Accountant | Vault Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, apart from your time | Fees vary by professional and volume; ask for a quote | Free plan (R$ 0) to see estimated gains; Resolvido plan on a monthly subscription, priced on the Vault Tax page |
| Time per month | Hours, growing with the number of trades | A few hours gathering statements and answering questions | Minutes to connect accounts and review alerts |
| Error risk | High on swaps, cost basis and dollar-to-real conversion | Low, if the history is complete | Low on the math; depends on every source being connected |
| DeCripto | Manual, on the e-CAC portal | The accountant advises; you file | Generates the files in the IN 2,291/2025 layout |
| Who issues the DARF | You, in GCAP or Sicalc | The accountant, from your data | You, through the tool, on the paid plan, after accepting the Authorization Term |
| With 40 exchanges | Unworkable | Expensive and slow | Integrations with more than 40 exchanges and networks |
What the calculation requires
The Receita requires four things most people do not keep.
First, the average cost of each crypto asset, updated at every purchase. Second, the date and value in reais of every disposal, including swaps: the Receita's IRPF 2026 questions and answers, question 653, confirms that exchanging one crypto for another is a taxable disposal valued in reais at market price on that date. Third, the sum of the month's sales, to know whether the R$ 35,000 exemption applies. Fourth, the split between what sits at an institution in Brazil and what sits abroad, because Law 14,754/2023 taxes crypto held or traded abroad at 15% in the annual return, with no monthly exemption.
Above the threshold, gains are taxed at 15% up to R$ 5 million, rising to 22.5% above R$ 30 million. The guide to crypto taxes in Brazil covers each bracket and the annual return.
Where spreadsheets break
A spreadsheet breaks at three predictable points.
The first is the swap. Trading ETH for SOL is a sale of ETH at that moment's price in reais and a purchase of SOL for the same amount.
Then comes currency. Dollar-denominated trades must be converted at the Central Bank's selling rate for the date; one wrong rate shifts the gain in every following month.
The third is DeCripto. IN RFB 2,291/2025 which revoked IN 1,888/2019, requires individuals to report, on the e-CAC portal, each month's operations on a foreign exchange, a decentralized platform or without an intermediary whenever the total exceeds R$ 35,000, by the last business day of the following month. The late fee is R$ 100 per month, and an omission costs 1.5% of the transaction value.
What an accountant needs from you
A good accountant settles interpretation: whether a staking reward is income or capital gain, whether a self-custody wallet holding stablecoins falls under the foreign regime, what to do about a DARF paid in error. What they cannot do is rebuild your history.
You have to hand over, for every exchange and wallet, the complete record of purchases, sales, swaps, deposits and withdrawals, with date, quantity and value in reais. Someone using three platforms and a personal wallet usually shows up with files in different formats, gaps in coverage, and transfers between their own accounts that look like sales. Moving funds abroad is a common case: the post on sending money abroad with stablecoins shows how to document the operation before it reaches the accountant.
What a tool automates
Vault Tax, checked on September 30, 2026, does five things a spreadsheet cannot and that eat an accountant's time.
It connects exchanges and wallets, with integrations to more than 40 exchanges and networks, in read-only mode with no withdrawal permission. It automatically routes domestic and foreign operations to the right regime. It runs a validator that flags missing cost basis, orphan transactions and transfers between your own wallets. It computes the monthly gain with the 15% to 22.5% brackets and the R$ 35,000 exemption, counting swaps within the limit. And it gets the DARF ready: on the Free plan you see the estimated gain and estimated DARF; on the Resolvido plan, a monthly subscription, you issue the DARF under your CPF after accepting the Authorization Term, with a PDF position statement and DARF history.
For anyone trading outside Brazilian exchanges, it also prepares the DeCripto files in the IN 2,291/2025 layout.
Honest limits
No tool can assess what it cannot see. If a wallet or exchange is left out, the average cost comes out wrong and the validator can only point at the gap. Edge cases, such as self-custody under Law 14,754/2023 and DeFi rewards, still call for professional opinion.

Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate crypto tax in Brazil with just a spreadsheet?
Yes, if you trade on a single Brazilian exchange, never swap and make few trades a year. From the first crypto-to-crypto swap or the second platform onward, the running cost basis and the monthly sales total become hard to keep without errors.
Does the accountant issue the DARF or do I?
Either can, in GCAP or Sicalc, under code 4600. What matters is that the month's gain is computed correctly and the payment goes out by the last business day of the following month. Late payment carries a 0.33% daily penalty capped at 20%, plus Selic interest.
Does Vault Tax replace an accountant?
No. It consolidates the history, computes the gain and issues the DARF, which solves the mechanical part. Interpreting edge cases, amending returns and the responsibility for the filing stay with you and your accountant.
How much does Vault Tax cost?
There is a Free plan, at no cost and with no card required, to connect accounts, run the validator and see the estimated gain and DARF, and the Resolvido plan, a monthly subscription, to issue the DARF under your CPF. Past months carry a separate charge. The current price is on the product page.
