Incomplete seed phrase: missing words and checksum errors
An incomplete seed phrase is not the end of your funds, as long as the gap is small and you know where the balance sits. With up to 3 missing words in a 24-word seed and one known address of the wallet, the search closes in hours or days; with 4, it is still possible in many cases; beyond that, the search space moves out of reach. This guide explains what each type of error means, what an invalid checksum message is telling you, how to prepare the material and when a case is feasible.
In short
- The seed carries an internal check (the checksum): "invalid phrase" means a word is wrong, not that the funds are gone.
- A missing word, a misspelled word and a wrong order are different problems with different difficulty. The wallet address is what tells the search when it has hit.
- Up to 3 missing words is usually feasible; 4 is the practical limit in many cases. A fully lost seed has no recovery.
Why the device says the seed is invalid
The BIP39 standard, checked in October 2026, uses a list of 2,048 words. A 12-word seed carries 128 bits of entropy plus 4 bits of checksum; a 24-word seed carries 256 bits plus 8 bits of checksum. Those checksum bits are embedded in the last word. When you type a wrong word, the checksum fails and the software reports an invalid phrase.
That has a useful consequence: the checksum works as a filter. In a 24-word seed only 1 in 256 combinations passes the check; in a 12-word seed, 1 in 16. In practice a search does not need to check every guess on the blockchain: it first discards the ones that fail the checksum, then checks the address of the survivors.
It also has a bad consequence: "passes the checksum" does not mean "right wallet". That is why the target address is indispensable.
The four types of error and what each one costs
| Type of error | Example | Difficulty | What is needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word swapped for a similar one | "sister" written instead of "system"; "abandon" misspelled | Low: the BIP39 list limits the options and the checksum filters | The words, in order, and one wallet address |
| Words out of order | 12 correct words, order lost | Medium: 12 words have 479 million orderings, and the checksum eliminates most | All the words and one address |
| Missing words, position known | 22 of 24, with the gaps marked | Low to medium: up to 3 missing usually solves in days | The remaining words with the position of each gap, and one address |
| Missing words, position unknown | 21 loose words, no idea where the gaps are | High: 4 is the practical limit in most cases | As much context as possible: a photo of the sheet, drafts, the way it was written down |
A common case mixes the types: one illegible word on the sheet (swapped), one skipped line (missing) and doubt about the order of two lines. Each layer multiplies the search space, which is why the diagnosis starts by separating what is certain from what is doubt.
What the wallet address solves
The search tests seed guesses. Every guess that passes the checksum derives a wallet with its own addresses. Without knowing which address should appear, there is no way to tell whether a guess is right, other than checking the balance of each one, which is slow and does not guarantee the balance found is yours.
Any address works: the receive address you gave an exchange, one that appears in an old transaction, a screenshot of the app. If you have none, the path is longer, but sometimes the exchange that sent the funds still has the address in its withdrawal history.
One detail: the passphrase. If the wallet used one, the correct seed opens an empty wallet without it. The post BIP39 passphrase (25th word) explains how to spot that case.
What to do before asking for help
Do not type the words you still have into any "seed checker" or "online recovery" website. Those pages exist to harvest seeds. The post what is a seed phrase lists the other storage mistakes.
Photograph the original sheet as it is, without correcting anything. Smudges, ambiguous letters and the order of the lines are information. Write down, separately, what you are sure of and what is doubt. Locate one address of the wallet. Check that address's balance on a block explorer: if it is zero, the problem is not the seed.
With that material the assessment is objective: how many words are missing, whether the position is known, whether there is an address. The incomplete seed recovery page describes the process and what is requested at each stage. The post forgot your wallet password: what recovery costs explains the success-fee model.
Vault Recovery is a service of Vault Ltda., part of the Vault Capital group, running since 2021. Wallet recovery is not securities advisory and is not regulated by Brazil's CVM. The assessment is free, nothing is requested in the form or the first conversation; after the agreement, only the minimum necessary goes through the agreed channel. The success fee, from 20% to 15% depending on the recovered value bracket, is only charged if the recovery works.
Frequently asked questions
I lost 2 words of my 24-word seed. Can it be recovered?
In most cases, yes, as long as you have one address of the wallet. With the position of the missing words known, the search usually closes in days; with the position unknown it takes longer but is still feasible.
My seed has 24 words but the software says it is invalid. What happened?
A word is wrong or out of place, and the checksum caught it. The most common cause is a look-alike word from the BIP39 list or two words swapped in position. With a known address, this is one of the fastest cases to solve.
Can a fully lost seed be recovered?
No. With no words at all there is no starting point: the possible combinations exceed any search capacity. The same applies to someone who only has the public address. A serious service says so in the first conversation.
Do I need to send the words I have in the first conversation?
No. Triage works from the description of the case: how many words are missing, whether there is an address, how the seed was written down. The words only come in after the agreement, through the agreed channel, and never in a form.
Let's talk
If only a few words are missing, or the seed fails the check and you have an address of the wallet, there is work to do. Vault Recovery's assessment is free, does not ask for the seed at this stage and only charges a fee on what is recovered.
Lost access to a crypto wallet?
Vault Recovery assesses your case for free and only charges a fee if the recovery works. No seed or password requested at this stage.
